Host-driven subspeciation in the hedgehog fungus, <i> Trichophyton erinacei</i>, an emerging cause of human dermatophytosis

چکیده

Trichophyton erinacei is a main cause of dermatophytosis in hedgehogs and increasingly reported from human infections worldwide. This pathogen was originally described the European hedgehog ( Erinaceus europaeus ) but also frequently found African four-toed Atelerix albiventris ), popular pet animal Little known about taxonomy population genetics this despite its increasing importance clinical practice. Notably, whether there are different populations or even cryptic species associated with hosts geographic regions not known. To answer these questions, we collected 161 isolates, performed phylogenetic population-genetic analyses, determined mating-type, characterised morphology physiology. Multigene phylogeny microsatellite analysis supported T. as monophyletic species, contrast to highly incongruent single-gene phylogenies. Two subpopulations, one specific mainly second hosts, were identified inside , slight differences size microconidia antifungal susceptibilities observed among them. Although process speciation into two lineages ongoing still gene flow between populations. Thus, present single notable intraspecies variability genotype phenotype. The data wild indicated that sexual reproduction de novo infection soil probably rare events clonal horizontal spread strongly dominates. molecular typing approach used study represents suitable tool for further epidemiological surveillance emerging both animals humans. results highlighted need use multigene ideally combination other independent markers understand boundaries dermatophytes.

Differentiating agents of dermatophytosis (Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton interdigitale) in human by dual polymerase chain reaction

Background: Dermatophytes create the most common fungal disease in humans, called dermatophytosis. The two species of Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton interdigital are responsible for over 80% of types of dermatophytosis. So far, several morphological and physiological methods have been used to differentiate these very similar species, but these methods are generally time-consuming and have...

Markers for host-induced gene expression in Trichophyton dermatophytosis.

Dermatophytes are adapted to infect keratinized tissues by their ability to utilize keratin as a nutrient source. Although there have been numerous reports that dermatophytes like Trichophyton sp. secrete proteolytic enzymes, virtually nothing is known about the patterns of gene expression in the host or even when the organisms are cultured on protein substrates in the absence of a host. We cha...

Human infection due to the hedgehog fungus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei.

Three human cases of skin infection caused by Trichophyton mentagrophytes var. erinacei are recorded. A review of work on the incidence and ecology in hedgehogs and as a source of human infection is given. It is suggested that a true increase in human infections is occurring. A description of the colonial and microscopical appearance of the fungus and their variance with other T. mentagrophytes...

Trichophyton rubrum: The Commonest Isolate from Dermatophytosis

Dermatophytosis is a trivial disease but has lot of psychological effect and a costly disease in terms of treatment. Though various species of dermatophytes produce clinically characteristic lesions, but a single species may produce variety of lesions depending upon site of infection. The present study was undertaken with following aim and objectives. Isolation and identification of different e...

An Epidemiological Study of Human Dermatophytosis in Karaj (2001)

One of the problems of public health in Iran is mycotic inflection which its incidence is not known. The most important disease of them is dermatophytosis. In this regard, determination of various species of etiologic agent, infection source, the risk of contact to animals, and public training are necessary to perform epidemiologic studies. In this research 750 suspected samples (including 560 ...
